ABOUT ATOLE NEWSLETTER

Same as the warm and hearty drink that has been consumed in Mesoamerica as daily breakfast for millennia, Atole —from the Nahuatl, atolli which means “watery”— is an illustrated food journal that seeks to nourish and inspire readers with wholesome recipes and stories that arise on the intersection between food and people —more specifically— between the food of Mexico and its ties to other cuisines and cultures around the world.

My name is Renata Lira. After 20 years of editing and contributing to publications, developing recipes and content for diverse projects, and coordinating press and communications for food-related businesses; the idleness of the pandemic put before me, this ever-more promising alternative space of creative independence and freedom called Substack, where the food publication that I always wanted to create finally has a place and a structure perfectly tailored to its needs: texts, photos, audio, music, and video in the same space, along with the technology required to shorten the distance between what I write and cook, and those who read me and follow my recipes.

This newsletter is created for people who love food —in general— cooks and just eaters, but especially for those who have an interest in learning about the food of México (not exclusively about Mexican cuisine, though its presence will be inevitably predominant) in depth —street by street and road by road— beyond the usual places and characters that tend to be recurrently hyped and favored by the media.

I feel lucky to have grown up in a culinary culture as wonderful and rich as the one from México, and few things make me happier than sharing what I’ve learned and researched about it, throughout my career and my life, with other people (hopefully, with more people, now that Atole is bilingüal).

Atole Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
